Molecular Diffusion on Surfaces We make extensive use of fluorescence recovery after photobleaching (FRAP) to measure the diffusive properties of lipids and proteins in membranes.
-
Curved Lipid Membranes Lipid bilayer membranes readily self-assemble on silica particles. Our group uses these spherical supported lipid bilayers to investigate molecular partitioning and curvature-dependent biomolecular interactions.
-
Soft Matter Sensing Our group uses quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D) sensing to investigate processes that occur on lipid bilayer membrane surfaces. QCM-D can measure tiny changes in mass (as small as picograms!) and structural properties (viscoelasticity) that result from vesicles rupturing and biomolecular interactions.
